Current adventure: Hong Kong & China

Sorry! Life got crazy; I’m in HK now after a bit of a travel hiatus. I’ll be posting little blurbs as I reacquaint myself with this city! At the same time I’ll be building up some buffer by finishing up the Peru, Mardi Gras, and Road Trip posts. Thank you for your patience ♥

2011 | US: Death Valley | US: Mardi Gras in NOLA | US: Denver, Boulder | US: Desert Hot Springs | US: EDC in Las Vegas | US: Del Mar Races in San Diego | US: Great American Beer Festival in CO |

Convenience store food

Asian convenience store food never ceases to amaze me.

Packaged chicken wings and “Phoenix claws”, or chicken feet.

Washing your own dishes

Eating out in HK, you’ll often be presented with a big bowl at the beginning of meals:

Along with one or two teapots.  If there’s two, the second one has hot water.  Even if your dishware comes packaged in plastic like this, you “wash” your dishes.  Everyone has their own method, but here’s mine:

  1. Pour hot tea or water in your bowl.  (People who use tea generally refill their teapot using the hot water pot after, so.. really, no difference)
  2. Swish your chopsticks and then your spoon around in the bowl, and then place them… NOT on the dirty table.  You’re smart, you’ll figure something out.
  3. Dip the teacup, rim down, into the bowl (washing the rim).  Pour hot tea/water into the teacup to wash it.
  4. Spoon or pour some water into your plate to wash that.
  5. Pour all the excess water/tea into the big bowl provided.

Voila!  ”Clean” dishware!

Things I Like About… Asian People

They’re so health conscious!  The promenade by where we live is littered at all hours with people of all ages doing little exercises to keep active.

You’ve got joggers and Tai-Chi’ers, and these things:

Little park areas that are littered with gym-machine-like contraptions, which are ideal for and oft-used by older people; they provide support for range of motion exercises and the silver surfers like to stand around and chat while loosening up their joints.  This is why people in Asia live so long, man.

This is my room in HK

And the “maid’s quarters” are here:

No, it’s not a closet (well, not ONLY a closet)

Where the boxes are, up top? That’s the bed.

What a beautiful view

The Spasso has an amazing view of Victoria Harbor.  Can you imagine sunset happy hour here? Or a dinner lit by (not stars!) but the million sparkling lights of the city. Haha!  One day, one day…
